Inkheart

Cornelia Funke’s best-selling novel, INKHEART, comes to life in director Iain Softley’s (THE SKELETON KEY, THE WINGS OF THE DOVE) feature-film adaptation of the same name. For 12 years, bookbinder Mo (Brendan Fraser) and his daughter, Meggie (Eliza Hope Bennett), have been traveling the world, poking around secondhand bookstores. Meggie correctly assumes that her father is looking for her mother, Resa (Sienna Guillory), who disappeared without a trace. What Meggie doesn’t know is that Mo is a Silvertongue, and when he reads a story aloud, the details and characters come to vivid life. But when a character comes out of a book, someone has to go back in, and Mo is searching a copy of the book, titled "Inkheart," into which Resa literally disappeared. When Mo read the story aloud, unaware of his powers, she was sucked into the story, and the fantastical novel’s villainous characters were released. Now, Mo and Meggie have to keep evil Capricorn and his henchmen from realizing their diabolical plot, and send everyone back where they belong.

INKHEART is awash with colorful details. Capricorn has had to make do with a stuttering Silvertongue who delivers characters that are half-read: text from the book is tattooed on their faces, or they suffer some other malady, emerging from the book mute or with an odd physical feature. Paul Bettany is engaging as Dustfinger, a character who desperately wants to be read back into "Inkheart" and return to his family, portrayed by Bettany’s real-life love, Jennifer Connelly, in a miss-her-if-you-blink performance. Helen Mirren is good fun as eccentric, feisty bibliophile Aunt Elinor, and Jim Broadbent appears as the novel’s author, who is enthralled by the possibilities of Mo’s gift. (1 hr. 43 min.)

Sex Drive

In the hallowed tradition of such coming-of-age comedies as PORKY'S and AMERICAN PIE, Sean Anders's SEX DRIVE is a genial and hilariously juvenile adventure about misguided intentions and true love. As the film opens, we meet the sensitive and lovelorn Ian Lafferty (Josh Zuckerman). Taunted by his testosterone-addled older brother, Rex (an excellent James Marsden), and shunned by his co-worker/dream girl, Ian takes solace in a raunchy Internet romance with a blonde beauty known as Ms. Tasty. With college approaching and his virginity still intact, Ian allows his friend--and least likely Lothario--Lance (Clarke Duke) to talk him into driving from Chicago to Knoxville. There, Ms. Tasty has promised Ian a wild ride of a more intimate nature. Complicating this lusty road trip is the boys' pilfering of Rex's beloved muscle car, as well as the presence of Ian's other best friend, Felicia (Amanda Crew). On the road to Knoxville the trio will encounter engine breakdowns, jilted backwater boyfriends, abstinent temptresses, and an Amish farmer (Seth Green) as handy with autos as he is quick with sarcasm. But as the action comes to a head in Knoxville, Ian and Felicia must confront the greatest hurdle yet: their feelings for each other. Will sex ruin the bonds of friendship? Will Lance change his carefree ways after an Amish assignation? And will Rex beat Ian to a bloody pulp once he catches up with Ian? Director Sean Anders fills SEX DRIVE with just the right mix of bawdy gags, sharp laughs and emotional honesty. The result is a randy romp that remains true to the lessons of its forefathers: love is never the trip you expect it to be. (1 hr. 49 min.)

One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest

The Neverending Story

In director Wolfgang Petersen's charming fantasy, Bastian (Barrett Oliver), a lonely schoolboy alienated from his father and bullied by his classmates, retreats to an attic where he becomes engrossed in a book entitled THE NEVERENDING STORY. It is the tale of a magical kingdom appropriately named Fantasia, since it is a world born of human fantasies. However, as humanity loses faith in the power of imagination, the once-thriving Fantasia is being destroyed by great storms of Nothingness. Dangerously ill herself, Fantasia's youthful empress (Tami Stronach) sends the young warrior Atreju (Noah Hathaway) on a quest to find a cure for the kingdom. After encountering flying dragons, swamp monsters and a vast assortment of other strange creatures, the young hero discovers that only a human boy can save Fantasia, at which point Bastian is drawn, literally, into the pages of the story. (1 hr. 34 min.)

James and the Giant Peach

James, a lonely orphan, is sent to live with his wicked and greedy Aunts Spiker and Sponge. Unwanted and forced to perform their menial chores, the boy dreams about going to New York City--a place, his father once told him, where dreams come true. Then James meets a mysterious old man who gives him a bag of magical glowing green things (crocodile tongues) and tells him that marvelous things will happen. Racing home, James accidentally spills the contents of the bag at the base of a barren old peach tree. To his astonishment, a peach instantly appears on the branch and grows and grows until it reaches 20 feet in diameter. Hungry and curious, James sneaks out that evening and takes a bite of the peach. When a glowing tunnel appears, the frightened boy ventures inside and meets Centipede, Earthworm, Ladybug, Glowworm, Grasshopper and Miss Spider. Rolling out to sea, the giant peach launches its passengers on a series of wildly imaginative adventures with New York City! as their final destination. (1 hr. 20 min.)

Blade Runner

A jaded ex-cop in a totalitarian future is forced out of retirement to hunt down a group of genetically engineered superhumans bred for slavery. Seeing their heroic struggle against an inhuman system, he ultimately falls in love with one of them. This visually dazzling and boldly moral film caught many critics napping when it first came out. In the Director's Cut version of the film, the director has removed the voice-over narration, as well as the "up" ending that was made from outtakes of Kubrick's "The Shining." Several key never-before-seen elements have also been added and the result is a full immersion in Scott's gaudy, decaying police state. Based on the novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" by Philip K. Dick. Academy Award Nominations: Best Art Direction-Set Direction, Best Visual Effects. (1 hr. 57 min.)

Hoot

A young boy moves to Florida and encounters a series of mysteries while trying to save a group of endangered owls. (1 hr. 30 min.)

The Golden Compass

The cast includes Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Sam Elliott, and Ian McShane. (1 hr. 58 min.)

The Pirates of Penzance

This Broadway version of the classic Gilbert & Sullivan musical comedy features almost the entire original cast. An honest young man is forced into piracy by a cruel twist of fate, but ultimately manages to return to the right side of the law, and win the girl of his dreams. (1 hr. 52 min.)

Blood Shadow

Eric Clapton - Crossroads Guitar Festival

Numerous guitar legends gathered together in June of 2004 at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas, to play a benefit show for Eric Clapton's Crossroads Center, a nonprofit addiction treatment facility in Antigua. Offering a stunning array of legendary acts, the talent assembled for the show was a music lover's dream come true, and this document of the event allows those who weren't there to experience the magic. Including performances by BB King, James Taylor, Carlos Santana, Joe Walsh, Jimmie Vaughn, John Mayer, Robert Cray, and Clapton himself, among many others.

The Black Cauldron

Young would-be warrior Taran searches for the titular magic vessel, lest it fall into the dastardly hands of the evil Horned King and allow him to summon an army of the undead. Fortunately, assisting in his quest are a feisty princess, the furry, friendly Gurgi, and psychic pig Hen Wen. Unusually dark but highly acclaimed Disney fare, released to video thirteen years after its theatrical run. Based on the juvenile fantasy novel by Lloyd Alexander; part of the "Chronicles of Prydain" series. Gold Collection Edition features a spooky bonus cartoon. (1 hr. 20 min.)

Eric Clapton - Crossroads Guitar Festival 2007

In 2004 the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas, played host to the first Crossroads Guitar Festival--a musical event curated by Eric Clapton. The 2007 incarnation of the event followed a similar pattern to the first show, and features stars such as Jeff Beck, Sheryl Crow, Willie Nelson, and Buddy Guy. Many of the musicians perform guest slots with other acts on the bill, making this a truly special occasion, and Clapton also uses the event to pay a moving tribute to the recently deceased Beatle George Harrison. All the money generated by the concert goes to aid the Crossroads Center, which is a nonprofit addiction treatment facility in Antigua.

Journey to the Center of the Earth

This 2008 movie update of Jules Verne's classic sci-fi/fantasy novel uses the 1864 tale as a template, with its hero, scientist Trevor Anderson (Brendan Fraser), referring to his missing brother's notes on the novel. His nephew Sean (Josh Hutcherson) in tow, Anderson travels to Iceland to investigate his sibling's theories, enlisting a fellow scientist's daughter, Hannah (Anita Briem), as a guide. Soon the trio's Icelandic mountain trek descends into a cave and, then deeper still to, naturally, the center of the earth, where dinosaurs and other strange prehistoric creatures still dwell. After many dangerous encounters with the native flora and fauna, Trevor, Sean, and Hannah must find a way back to the surface or face being stranded miles below the earth's crust.

Directed by Eric Brevig, a veteran Hollywood visual effects supervisor (MEN IN BLACK, THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW), JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH clearly delights in unveiling eye-catching CGI creatures and landscapes. Presented in some theaters in 3D format, the film features lunging beasts and vertigo-inducing visions, which are effective even in 2D, while Fraser, working in the same amiable vein as the MUMMY movies, provides a human focus amidst the special effects. For fans of the ever-likable Fraser and/or the JOURNEY story, there is plenty to enjoy in this effects-heavy adventure film. (1 hr. 32 min.)

The Mighty Peking Man

A group of explorers set out to find the legendary Mighty Peking Man, a mysterious ape-like creature said to reside in the Himalayas. On the way they encounter a girl stranded after a plane crash with nothing to wear but a skimpy bikini. The band takes the giant ape back to Hong Kong, but things get out of hand, resulting in the destruction of many model buildings and toy helicopters. Created in the wake of hysteria following Dino De Laurentiis' 1976 remake of KING KONG, this is a bad-movie classic, rereleased thanks to Quentin Tarantino and his Rolling Thunder Pictures.

The Project

Three filmmakers attempting to shoot a gritty documentary about life in the inner city find their mission complicated as the best friend of one of their subjects attempts to take center stage in the film, drawing the trio behind the camera directly into the very world they were attempting to observe objectively. Brooklyn-based filmmakers Justin, Dana, and John were determined to make their mark in the film industry by crafting a film that allows the viewer to experience firsthand the hardships of living in the city. While Justin chooses to hit the beat with NYPD cops Dan Masterson and Alex Mora (the latter of whom is currently aiding his son in a valiant fight against cancer) his partners opt to focus on telling the tale of Thomas Coventry - an underprivileged African American youth who seems poised to break the cycle of poverty that has plagued his family for generations. When Thomas' unstable friend Nate complicates the situation, however, violence and emotion quickly threaten to cloud the filmmaker's objectivity. (1 hr. 27 min.)

Female Space Invaders

After the massive popularity of STAR WARS, film producers all over the world rushed to cash in on the desire for space adventures, and few did so with more goofy charm than FEMALE SPACE INVADERS (aka STARCRASH). Former model and Bond girl Caroline Monroe plays Stella Star, an intergalactic smuggler. Along with her partner Akton, she's on the run from cosmic cops Thor and L (a robotic cowboy with a Texan accent) when they come across the sole survivor of a space battle instigated by the villainous Zarth Arn. Captured by their pursuers, but with the knowledge of Zarth Arn's dastardly deed, they are brought before the Emperor of the Galaxy (Christopher Plummer), who asks of the four a special task: to find Zarth Arn and destroy him before he can use his super weapon to conquer the galaxy! Filled with cheesy special effects, inventive villains, and the skimpiest space outfits since BARBARELLA, FEMALE SPACE INVADERS is a over-the-top, campy sci-fi adventure.

Afterschool

Early twentysomething writer/director Antonio Campos makes a startlingly assured directorial debut with AFTERSCHOOL. Set in an exclusive Northeastern prep school, the film follows Robert (Ezra Miller), a confused youngster who spends most of his time watching videos on the Internet. Some of these are harmless, but some are much more troubling, including pornography and actual fights that have been captured on various consumer-grade video cameras. Robert himself doesn't appear to have violent desires, yet when he gets his hands on a video camera for a class project and starts becoming closer to fellow classmate Amy (Addison Timlin), he experiences feelings he has previously only encountered on a computer screen. During the filming of a class project, Robert unwittingly captures the overdose of two of the school's most popular girls--twins, no less--sending him into an introverted, despondent tailspin.

Campos's film owes an obvious debt to the work of German provocateur Michael Haneke, and not only in its controversial subject matter. More directly, it's in Campos's ability to create a palpable sense of tension with the camera. Credit must be given here to cinematographer Jody Lee Lipes (WILD COMBINATION: A PORTRAIT OF ARTHUR RUSSELL), who uses a slowly roaming camera when necessary, but otherwise maintains a static, off-kilter frame, hinting at the dangers that lurk just beyond every corner. AFTERSCHOOL speaks volumes about the influence of the Internet and technology on our nation's impressionable youth. (1 hr. 47 min.)

Paper Man

Struggling writer Richard Dunne (Jeff Daniels) is unhappy with his status in middle age, but his friendship with a young woman (SUPERBAD's Emma Stone) helps him make it through the day, much to the anger of his wife (Lisa Kudrow). Though that description might sound rather pedestrian, this dramedy adds a twist to the formula by introducing Richard's imaginary friend, a superhero played by Ryan Reynolds. (1 hr. 50 min.)

Casino Jack and the United States of Money

Lobbyists have long played a powerful role in American politics, but it wasn't until Jack Abramoff became the center of a 2006 corruption scandal with ties to leading members of Congress (and even the White House) that many became aware of just how deep and pernicious their influence truly was. The son of a wealthy businessman, Abramoff became a Republican activist in college, involved in programs to raise funds for GOP candidates and supporting political movements in Angola and South Africa that he believed promoted a free-market ideology. In 2001, Abramoff took control of a profitable gaming empire after the murder of casino owner Gus Boulis, while also operating a lobbying business that curried political favor among Republican politicians through money and expensive gifts (one of his leading allies was GOP party whip Tom DeLay). However, when Abramoff was discovered to have defrauded a number of Native American groups hoping to open gambling casinos with promises of political favors that could be obtained for the right price, his empire came crashing to the ground, taking a number of important reputations along with it. Filmmaker Alex Gibney chronicles the rise and fall of Jack Abramoff and the often bizarre story of how his political and financial ambitions took root in the documentary CASINO JACK AND THE UNITED STATES OF MONEY, which includes interviews with a number of his associates and rare newsreel footage of his early years as a political gadfly. CASINO JACK AND THE UNITED STATES OF MONEY was an official selection at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. (120 hr.)

At the heart of Frank's business is Frank Tramontana (Danny Aiello), a former public relations executive who now drives a hearse for a living. Frank is a handsome man who prides himself on both his spotless reputation and his remarkable ability to seduce young women like statuesque beauty Lauren (Heather Tom). When Frank learns that Ragucci's may finally be closing their doors, he recruits fellow employees John "The Prince" Monaco (Jon Polito) and Nino Degeneroso (Louis Vanaria) in concocting a scheme to keep the funeral home afloat. But Frank is about to find out that it isn't easy to save the day while attempting to keep up with a much younger girlfriend and negotiate your son's tuition with your demanding ex-wife, and when the gang's shady scheme draws the attention of local gossip writer Sid Buford (Frank Bongiorno), all three will be begging to bury the past. Madchen in Uniform

Christa Winsloe's novel MAEDCHEN IN UNIFORM was first filmed in Germany in 1933. The story, about a sensitive schoolgirl's lesbian attachment to her headmistress, was handled tastefully, albeit with remarkable frankness for its period. The 1958 remake is somewhat toned down and the material directed in a routine fashion, though technically the production has fewer frayed edges than the 1933 version. Romy Schneider stars in the old Hertha Thiele role as the student, while Lili Palmer takes over from Dorothea Wieck as the older woman. Made in 1958, the remake of MAEDCHEN IN UNIFORM was not released in the U.S. until 1965, possibly because it went against the production code edict concerning "suicide as a plot solution." (91 hr.)

Amor en Fin

Its full title TRES PIEZAS DE AMOR EN UN FIN DE SEMANA (shortened here to simply AMOR EN FIN), this Mexican-produced, Spanish-language ensemble drama marked one of Oscar-nominated actress Adriana Barraza's follow-ups to the 2006 BABEL. The saga takes place in Mexico City, where three separate love stories that cut dramatically across Mexico's social classes transpire just before the most controversial Mexican election of modern times. One story finds beleaguered housewife Sofia (Barraza) falling in love with her neighbor, a musician and alcoholic. Another finds a group of young socialites engaged in a ménage-a-quatre that spins rapidly out of control. And the third follows Yolanda (Lilia Mendoza), a destitute juice seller who seals her own dire fate when she develops feelings for a young gang member. The trio of stories cumulatively posit love and romance against obstacles including the lust for power, greed, and basic human insecurity. (90 hr.)

Amish Grace

A grieving Amish mother struggles to forgive the woman whose husband killed her daughter and four other innocent schoolchildren in this drama inspired by the tragic true-life events that unfolded in a Nickel Mines schoolhouse on October 2, 2006. It was a senseless crime that no one could have foreseen. In the wake of the shooting, the media descended upon Nickel Mines, and the parents of the murdered schoolchildren remained steadfast in their promise to practice forgiveness -- except for Ida Graber (Kimberly Williams-Paisley). Devastated by the loss of her beloved daughter, Ida found herself unable to forgive the gunman and his wife, Amy Roberts (Tammy Blanchard). With each passing day Ida's sorrow continues to fester, testing her faith in ways that she, and many others in her community, never dreamt of. (120 hr.)
